Unpopular

91

At times when people accepted the status quo without question, some rebels have dared to resist. When a cause is noble, it often pays to be unpopular.

    Eh
Needs a new narrator. Sorry. Premise is ok. Stories seem one sided.

    Great idea, miserable execution
I really want to give this a good review. I think the concept is a great idea and that’s what’s holding it from being one star. But unfortunately I can’t. I listen to a ton of podcasts and this one has possibly the worst execution of a well established podcast that I’ve listened to. 1) The sound quality is not horrible but certainly not good. 2) The background music is infuriating! They have all these noises that seemingly go along with the story but they get way to loud and distracting that I can’t pay attention to what’s being said. 3) The word choices are obnoxious. It’s like they wrote the whole thing and then went through and used a thesaurus to change half the words to the biggest one on the list. 4) It’s not well written at all. She takes you down these paths that are suppose to lead you back to the main point of the person’s story but they get so convoluted and off track that I forget who we’re even talking about. I really hope the Unpopular team reads this review and makes changes because I want to like this podcast, I really do. But it’s honestly a waste of time as it is now.

    Interesting
Interesting podcast. Information presented offer details of history and people I did not have much knowledge of. Keep up good work, we need more programs such as this. No problem with background music and I feel some people focusing on host’s enunciation if words is petty.

    Has a lot of potential
The concept is a great idea but for nearly 30 minute episodes they are still very top level and don’t get very in-depth. I also feel like there is some failure to explain how out of the box some of this thinking was even if it ended up being correct. It often seems as if the people holding to conventional wisdom and science are made out in a bad light. Even though as the commentator/author (not sure of the correct term here) admits it’s generally good that people who are as out of the box thinks like this are generally ignored.

    Sensory overload
Between the advertising, music, and voice that sounds like it is about to laugh out loud at any minute I wasn’t able to concentrate. Certainly someone will find it interesting...

It’s like a C- High School History Paper
Content, tone, and phrasing all read like a poor quality high school history class paper. Bad excuse for a history based podcast.

Music and sound mixing is perfect!
I keep seeing reviews saying the music is annoying and I couldn’t disagree more. It adds layers. Please keep it! Those other boring podcasts already exist, thanks for doing something new.

    It had potential
I was excited to listen to the Sitting Bull episode. I’ve been to some of the historical sites related to his life. However, after the first 7 minutes of the host’s winding personal narrative... she still hadn’t really talked about Sitting Bull. Back to Stuff You Missed in History Class go me.

    Dump the background music
Like the premise of the show. Just listened to June 4 episode. Almost stopped. Background music while host was talking was too annoying.

    Hard to listen to
Although the premise of this podcast seemed to be something that would be highly appealing to me (women’s rights, human rights, speaking truth to power and so on), the first episode I chose was hard to listen to because of Yves’ delivery — her inability to pronounce words correctly. She doesn’t enunciate internal t’s. For example Britain is pronounced Bri-in; mountain is pronounced mou-in. If a one-syllable word ending in a “t” is followed by the word “in” — the t is dropped, and together the two words become bu-in. Diction and elocution lessons would improve her delivery, make the podcast more listenable and as a result, get her message out to a larger audience. I’m guessing my review will be ‘unpopular’, but I’ve taken the time to write it because I think Yves has something important to say that society can benefit from hearing. Broadcast delivery is a skill like any other, that can be acquired with time and effort. I hope she puts in both, because I want her to be successful and make a real difference — which I believe is her goal, and is, after all, what her podcast is all about.

Host is poor and content is full of platitudes
Good idea, but you can’t address us as high school kids.

    5 stars
Thoughtfully insightful. Thanks Yves! Wish episodes were released more frequently. Perhaps in the (near) future.
