Anglo Saxon England Podcast

197

Series 1 is a concise social and political history of England from the 5th to 11th centuries.

Series 2 is a social history how society and lordship worked during and directly after the migration period. It then looks at how that culture evolved, as the impact of economic development and the Viking invasions wrought changes in lordship and political structures. It looks also at the landscape - how it affected peoples' lives, how the Anglo Saxons shaped it in turn - and some of the marks ordinary people left for us to see today. And lastly, it considers whether the Norman conquest effected deep change or merely accelerated processes already underway.

Sister series of The History of England podcast, with which is shares the contents of Series 1.

    Best podcaster hands down
David Crowther is my favorite podcaster by far. He makes me laugh and don’t sleep on his social history episodes. The ones on architecture are a tour de force!

    Pay attention, folks...
Pay attention, folks, THIS is how to podcast. David Crowther is an artiste of podcasting, though he might cringe at that snooty description. Engaging, intelligent, informative, and witty, he's far and away my favorite podcaster. I marvel at how his delivery of his well-prepared content comes across as seemingly spontaneous. Yep, anyone who can have me on the edge of my seat waiting to hear the next new episode about Anglo-Saxon history has to be an artiste!

    So glad I found this
It’s great to find a history of this period that focuses on “ordinary” life, not just the rulers and political events.

    Great stuff
I so enjoy this podcast. The cheeky humor never gets in the way of the earnest love and care for the subject of life in early medieval England. Before it was England. So really that one wet island in the years between 500 and 1066 CE. Anyway, if you like early medieval history peppered with Gen X nerd culture references, this may be for you. It certainly is for me.

I was so excited to see this back in my current feed. David is creating new episodes which sound very exciting! I highly recommend this pod as well as all of David’s other pods and I especially recommend membership to be able to hear all the Shedcasts.

    The Last Kingdom
I started to watch the "The Last Kingdom" on Netflix and wanted to find out if historical basis for what was portrayed on TV bears out with the historical record. I stubmled across Crowther to my delight. I enjoy how he interjects his wit into the subject matter. I definitely will finish the Anglo Saxon podcast and will look at other content he's created.

    Excellent!
David revisits the early years of the history of England in this offshoot podcast. A really good addition to this incredible series. Well worth the listen.

    Charming History
While the history of Anglo Saxon England might not be the most peaceful, the charming host David Crowther makes it all worth listening to.

    Hip hip hurrah!
The history of England is so good, I decided to start at the beginning again, and learned of the Anglo Saxon history. I'm thrilled! THRILLED! Of course it's difficult to put out 2 podcasts at the same time... Surely the History of Emglanders would be willing to cut back to every other week for the sake of the die hardship that are watering at the mouth for more Anglo Saxon background before heading back into History of England? Please please! And thank you for the awesome podcasts and website. You're the best!

    Good job
Very excited to learn more about this under appreciated, but legitimately fascinating time period.

    Best History Podcaster
The absolute best history podcaster - and if some is good, more is better. Don't ever stop! David is genuinely funny, and interesting. Only critique would be to lose the French accents. Also, as an American, I don't know the details or the conclusions of even some of the major arcs, so I'd ask that there be less "spoilers" or foreshadowing in the narrative. I get that that's silly in the context of a "history", but this isn't academia (I don't mean that as an insult, quite the contrary), it's truly excellent educational entertainment.

    Best Host Ever
Of all the podcasts I listen to, David Crowthers' are the ones i enjoy the most! I love his wit and humor, and although the subject matter isn't my first choice, his are still my first choice in podcasts just because I love to hear him so much! David, keep up the great work and if you ever do pocasts on traveling or marriage or other topics I will be your first subscriber!

    Oh, those crazy Anglo-Saxons!
After listening to a single episode of the Anglo-Saxon podcast, no one can imagine that history is actually boring. David brings those dry confusing chronicles to life with verve. I think it is verve. It might be vim. I always get those confused.
  • PhilipTheFair
    Great Storytelling
A worthy supplement to the History of England by my favorite podcaster. David Crowther just keeps getting better. Please listen to this "bloke in a shed." You won't be disappointed!

    Great rework
Mr. Crowther did an excellent job covering the Anglo-Saxons on his the history of England podcast. These episodes goes into the depth and a must listen to for anyone interested in the Anglo-Saxons.

    Wonderful supplement to THoE
I'm a subscriber to Mr. Crowther's The History of England and was well pleased to hear the announcement that he was looping round to redo the Anglo-Saxon bits. If there was a weakness in his podcast, it was the Anglo-Saxon section - mainly because he was just learning his craft at that stage. He is making the most of his opportunity fora redoand I am glad of it.

    Excellent Companion
Oh those Saxons. The shoulders on which the English were built. I highly recommended this Podcast. As far as David goes; there's a frood who really knows where his towel is!

    Worth every bit
David is the best "bloke in a shed" podcast on the planet. I've been listening to his history of England podcast and I am so happy that he's re cutting the Anglo Saxon episodes again. I listened to these episodes at least twice on the other podcast and am loving this third pass.

A topic that deserves its own podcast and got it
As glad as I was that David was going to cover this topic in its own podcast, I was thrilled with the quality of research he brought to bear. I am enjoying the podcast very much and look forward to hearing much more about the Anglo Saxons.
  • OldFather78
    Delightful and Informative
Well written and researched broad history. Another home run or whatever the cricket equivalent is.

    Bring on the Anglo Saxons
This is how history should be presented. Great pacing and delivered with knowledge and wit. I enjoy the Hx of England and am greatly enjoying the revisit of the Anglo Saxon period. Being in the US, this part of history was not given in great detail during school years so I'm enjoying filling in the gaps. Keep up the great work!

    Fantastic
    Everything David does is great!

    Outstanding
I love David's History of England podcast, but have to agree with him that the early episodes of that podcast were weak. Understandably, it took David some time to find his voice. I love this period, and am delighted David is going back to readdress this period. The early episodes of this podcast have the same level of quality, storytelling, and humor that the HofE has.
  • The Ancient World
    A Great Idea, Wonderfully Executed!
I have a confession to make: It took me a few tries to get through those first few History of England episodes. BUT I kept at it, since I knew David would soon hit his stride. And I was proven right! The series quickly became one of my favorites. And (despite any misgivings he may have had), I think the idea of going back, and digging deeper, into the subject matter of those early episodes is a brilliant one. Though often ill-documented, the period between the Roman withdrawal and Norman invasion is extremely interesting, especially with an engaging podcaster at the helm. I'll be on board for the whole trip! Thanks for all the hard work
  • noitnoit
    David is a mind reader
Two days before David announced he was taking a trip back to the Anglo-Saxon era I thought to myself, “it’s too bad that podcasters can’t go back and re-do those early ones.” Who says you can’t go back! Thanks David. Stellar.

    DC is The Man!
It just doesn't get any better than this! The Big DC has found his calling! I ran across The History of England early-episode 2, I think, and it was good. David got comfortable around episode 20, and started to really shine. A natural-born storyteller, he makes you feel like you know the time, and the cast of characters that lived there. There isn't a better history podcaster out there. Only Scotts 'The Ancient World' and 'Bloodline' gives as much, pleasure-wise. One can tell they both love history, and podcasting. I'n glad they do, because I love listening to them, and appreciate the fact that they are probably sacrificing their entire personal life to create top quality stuff! I am concerned about David trying to manage two podcasts...if his wife dumps him due to neglect, how will he take it? Will the podcasts go on?? Will his offspring still participate? Actually, they haven't made an appearance, lately...hmm. Oh no - it may have started already... Stay tuned....

Love this new Anglo Saxon podcast!
David Crowther returns to this period of history with his characteristic charm & dry wit. If you have an inkling of interest in Anglo Saxon history (and even if you don't), check out this podcast. It's worth a listen for anyone who enjoys listening to smart, clever storytellers.

To the bloke in the shed.
    Simple: Thank you, David.

    Superb storyteller…
I find David Crowther brings amazing depth of character and revealing context to an exciting narrative. He's a fantastic narrator of history and culture, exactly the sort of fellow you are hoping you'll run into in a pub, willing to give you the the story you truly crave - because it's fun, and you really learned something in his telling.

    Very good!!
I am honored to be the first to review this podcast. Anything with David Crowther at the helm comes with the highest recommendation.
