Beatnik BohemianStrong Soprano Sax SoloKirk, I have to say I enjoyed your work up of Fast As You Can. And when you played a soprano sax solo over the outro it was transcendent! You gave me goosebumps in the beginning which moved over to chills and then at the end I was having the full body shivers! Well done!!! BRAVO! BRAVO! BRAVO!

Colin Bo-BolinMy new favorite podcast!Thank you for creating such a joyful exploration of all that is beautiful in music. I needed this right now! Your “Dark Side of the Moon” episode inspired me to learn the album and explore the harmonies and melodies behind one of the greatest albums of all time. The Bm-F move in “Great Gig in the Sky” is a Lydian feel! OMG, I love your work. Again, thank you. This is an amazing show.

Big old fishGreat funThis podcast just makes me feel good because it’s so positive and clever. I grew up in a house with one console stereo, and for most of my childhood every record we owned—whether it was my oldest brother’s copy of Revolver or the LP of sea shanties that someone gave my dad—was stored in it. I think that made me a pretty accepting if not very discriminating listener. Kirk Hamilton is teaching me all kinds of things that make sense of all the random stuff I listen to.
-
JanixDEncyclopedic music knowledge put to good useKirk knows why you love those greats and takes you on a voyage of discovery that encompasses instruments and voice and why they matter in each song. Fun!
-
Flawed logic-JDEach episode is a journeyKirk is like a tour guide, and each song a journey. He points out all the landmarks along the way, things you probably would miss on your own.

Griffin2020Top ten! This is absolutely the best music/song analysis podcast out there. Tells the what, the why, and why it works. Teaches music theory without being boring or condescending. One of my top ten must listen shows!

TPritch7783Love the breakdowns!Kirk does an outstanding job of leveraging his background to dissect great songs. I feel like I’m getting an education in music theory, history, and nuance all at the same time.

PhilipQsongwriterA Masterclass Every EpisodeI’ve been playing at being a musician since the late 1970’s, even took some classes in college way back when. About a year ago I stumbled upon the Strong Songs podcast and was drawn in by the title “The Band: The Last Waltz”. Since The Band is one of my major musical influences, the fact that I had seen the movie, and instantly knew what the episode was going to focus on, I listened. That changed my life. I wasn’t a podcast listener before that discovery and now I am. So much so that I binged every episode from the first, “Africa” by Toto, to the most recent, “Post -Season Update, Summer Plans, & Some Music Recs”! Now I’m even diving into the recasts which are all well worth the additional listen. Here’s why: What Kirk Hamilton does is translate what I hear into things I can listen for. This has been helping me improve my ear (training/skills) as well as increase my knowlege of how music works. I have throughly enjoyed being guided on deep dives into songs that are familiar to me and being introduced to music I hadn’t ever heard or thought much about before. Kirk’s ability to pick out the various parts of a song recording and communicate the tangible aspects (pitch, rhythm, dynamics, harmony) as well as the more ethereal facets (groove, emotion, vibe) is phenomenal. He is a generous master who has a very approachable style and a compassionate spirit, making my musical experiences better than ever before. I recommend the Strong Songs podcast to anyone who will listen because it is 100% on target for just about anyone who wants to better understand music to enjoy it more.
-
PeppermintCandyHighly recommendMy knowledge of playing music is limited however the host makes the songs he talks about and deconstructs come alive. He is so knowledgeable, personable and enthusiastic! My favorites so far are the episodes on Babylon Sisters, Help Me and September. A++!
-
worldtraveler728Art Blakey’s MoaninFantastic episode which explains the genius of this song to a non-musician , but Jazz lover like me. Kudos!
-
LRJalarnedI’m hookedI enjoyed your interview of Morris and Josh on Stevie Wonder’s “Songs in the Key of Life.” He is one of my favorite artist.

NWShredKiller podcast for music lovers of all stripesI just discovered this podcast last week, and all I can say is Wow! I listen to a lot of music podcasts- Adam Neely, Charles Cornell, Rick Beato, You’ll Hear It, etc, and I’ve never heard anyone who can speak to both what’s happening technically in a song, AND what makes a song so resonant. I’ve already listened to a half dozen episodes and I can’t wait to hear more. If you love thinking about the how and why of music, don’t miss this one!
-
babayaga_88Janet Jackson show was stellar!!Janet is so underrated as a vocalist. Thanks for showing this song the love it deserves. Her whole catalog should be studied!
-
JasHarTXApproachable class on musicianshipAs an amateur musician and songwriter, I find I’m learning a lot in a way that’s enjoyable for me. At first, I was weary of songs that I’m not a fan of, but Kirk analyzes them with such enthusiasm and depth of knowledge that I enjoy every episode.
-
MervAdrianHow does it work? Why does it work? Listen to this.As a musician, I long bemoaned the absence of commentary that actually talks about how the parts of a song contribute to its appeal. The way the harmony connects chords, the way a change in a drum pattern kicks it into overdrive, the way a vocal harmony warms the feeling by choosing the right notes. .. But this podcast doesn’t demand that you be a musician - although it helps. You just have to listen, and listening is not just hearing. It’s active, and you can learn how in ways that will dramatically enhance your appreciation and enjoyment. Along the way, you’ll find artists, songs, and even genres, you might have ignored. And all delivered with infectious enthusiasm that’s impossible to resist. Give it a try - go back to the early ones and see if you don’t decide to listen to them all! I did.
-
Ex-Pat in LondonThank you.Great pod about music, explained in a way that doesn’t talk down to people (like me) who love music but aren’t up on scales, notes and multiple instruments. Particularly love the mail bag episodes.
-
earpainAbsolutely love this podcastSo many podcast consists of a couple people sharing inside jokes, laughing too long and loud over slightly funny banter and turn me off within an hour, never to listen again. This podcast is different, solo voice sharing thought provoking insight, and deep musical knowledge. I just started to learn the piano, and the breakdown he provides on song craft and making music is fantastic. It can get deep, and sometimes I’m lost, but I can follow him as he breaks things down. Great find, great podcaster.
-
PabloIOSOne of the best music podcasts everThis is such a wonderful podcast. The research and attention to detail is thorough. The explanations are clear and engaging. The host is passionate and articulate. If you love music, you’re gonna love this podcast.

MJF561Great podcast to learn about how songs are madeKirk has a great command of music theory and breaks apart songs and their various elements to teach the listeners how the music works. It’s a fascinating podcast.
-
MattIceman0808Love this podcast!Ever since discovering this podcast, I have been binging my way through many of these episodes. I absolutely love the discussion and a little hints, tips and tricks one can apply when listening to were experiencing a song in a new way. I used to have discussions about songs so many of these with my father however, sadly we no longer live near each other in our conversations that become less frequent overtime. This podcast has scratch the itch for me to be able to have a discussion around music that I love. It also inspired me to get back into playing music and have recently purchased an electronic drum set as a result of the exuberant enthusiasm evident in this podcast

lauf-aiya-rsonreally goodi'm not rly a music guy but have been blown away by the few episodes i've heard. really enjoying the sheer musical knowledge and super clean editing + explanations. i like the way this show pushes me to listen to little details of the music i generally struggle to notice or name all at once. really nice listen!
-
ZepqueenAmazing show !Such a wonderful and well put together show, just started listening and it’s one of my favorites. This is a must listen for any music fan as Kirk does an awesome job at explaining all the aspects of the songs.

Mj6986Interesting podcast but makes you wish for adsFirst episode I listened to (Chicago recast) took 9 minutes before the actual content started. Had at least two plugs for Patreon before I heard a note. Will keep listening/skipping and reserve the right to adjust my rating (up) since Kirk is def doing a good thing.

Christine OchoAccessible and emotionally resonant analysis.Kirk does such an amazing job with this podcast. The mark of a truly effective educator is not to simply state facts or point out salient features (this chord over that bass-line, etc) and then move on — looking at you, Rick B. — without regard for whether and how naive listeners will be able to absorb and understand the import, but to patiently break it down to the most basic level, with abundant repetition, adding layers of complexity only as and — most importantly — when it will be understandable for a non-musician. Kirk’s analysis is totally accessible and really hits home. At times, I find it emotionally overwhelming to be within the song or particular parts of a song for so long. The episodes on “Everybody wants to rule the World (TfF) & Kate Bush’s “Wuthering Heights” are truly outstanding acheivements; almost like pieces of art in and of themselves, worth repeat listens like the strong songs they feature. Aside from his musical and technical insights, Kirk also displays a remarkable ability to describe the emotional resonance of the music or lyric, and how it taps in to our personal vulnerabilities. After all, isn’t that what really makes music special? Now, if only he would do some Talk Talk …

kiddblurMakes songs you’ve never heard feel like lifelong favoritesKirk is such a master of breaking down that makes a song great. Episodes of this show have made me adore songs that I’ve never heard of in genres I’ve never liked. By breaking down the masterful work that the artists put into each song, you really start to appreciate the craft in a way that simply listening to music won’t give you. 5/5

andrew.conklingNerdy in the best wayAs a music nerd, it’s nice to listen to a podcast that really dives deep on some great songs. I’ve loved to support this show since the beginning. 🖤
-
Normo4Come for the song; stay for the hostCome for the song; stay for Kirk Hamilton’s contagious enthusiasm, eloquent narrative, educational deconstruction, and masterful reconstruction!
-

river dragon G7G7MORE!!!So impossibly good, I need more!!! It covers so much!!! I play guitar and trumpet, but this podcast has made me think about music so different. Please do Weezer!!!!!! Preferably My Name is Jonas. Also maybe some AC/DC or Metallica. But definitely Weezer!!! (And by the way, the G7 in my name does reference the chord, it was the very first one I learned many many years ago.☺️)
-
Darkmage7770Bruh.Your TOTK episode just left me inconsolable, it’s exactly what I needed 6 months after the game. Thank you for the reminder of how incredible that game was to experience for the first time. If you ever feel the burning need to do a 6 hour intense breakdown of Zelda music, you’ll have listeners I promise.
-
Jazzlover9316My current favorite podcastMy favorite time of the day is when I listen to this podcast when cooking meals. I like how Kirk breaks down songs and shows their nuances. Unfortunately, I’m not knowledgeable enough in terms of music to understand all the details. I’ve also discovered a lot of great songs through this podcast and learnt to appreciate the songs I knew more.

Parker tweedStrong Songs is the bestMy favorite podcast in the world
-
cajaygleGreat for musicians and non-musiciansThis is a great podcast for both musicians and non-musicians alike. The host Kirk Hamilton dissects songs piece by piece to discuss how they were created and what makes them interesting, unique, and great. While he gets into composition and performance details that musicians will appreciate, he’s very articulate and makes it approachable for non-musicians. Mostly though his love for ‘strong songs’ comes through and each episode makes me appreciate the song he’s covering more deeply. I discovered this podcast about a month ago and have been tearing through the archive of episodes and I joined his Patreon.
-
JC1993Well Done and Well Worth Your TimeThis is an astonishing podcast. The host knows his stuff and his earnest, positive approach is a breath of fresh air. So many music history podcasts spend their time tearing music down while breaking it into key components, but Kirk shows a true appreciation for all the elements, regardless of how artists chose to put it together. You’ll never listen to your favorite song the same way again - you’ll like it even more.
-
kelizwallaceYou’ve outdone yourselfLong time listener, that opera ep sent me right to your Patreon. That was INCREDIBLE.
-
Danjones0806Best music analysis I’ve heardDiscovered this show recently (through a 20K Hertz episode about Zelda) and am very excited about it. I’m going back and listening to all the episodes. I am a hobby guitarist and songwriter, and this is just the perfect mix of music theory, cool things in the mix you probably didn’t notice, good explanations backed up by accurate recreations on his own instruments, a personable and professional host, and general enthusiasm for music. I learn something worth writing down from pretty much every episode.
-
Nicc878Finally, someone who gets itI’ve always wondered if people hear beautiful, perfect songs the way I do, and the answer is “Yes!” I love the breakdowns here
-
EVJoeThe worst thing about Strong Songs...... is that it will make you wish you were a better musician, and then very aptly remind you of the various tried-and-true methods of improving as a musician, thereby leaving the onus of effort on you, the desperately inspired listener. I love this show. I found it because another podcast (A More Civilized Age) mentioned Kirk's Strong Songs episode about the music of Andor. After listening to that and being drawn in by Kirk's cheerily optimistic (but not saccharine) tone, his earnest-seeming love for music and the various musical phenomenon he discusses. If you enjoy listening to music, learning about music history (biographical AND technical) but don't have a musical bone in your body (outside of your inner ear), I still think Strong Songs has a lot to offer, and who knows? Maybe Kirk will convince you to start voice lessons or pick up a guitar, or even a synthesizer.
-
BandtheCGreat for understanding music productionFantastic breakdown of songs, instrumentation, production techniques and even a little theory mixed in. A must listen for musicians wanting to produce their own or others music.
-
stampinfrauleinEnjoyable and interesting for all levels of musical appreciationI’m a new listener—came over because this show was referenced in an episode of Twenty Thousand Hertz—and I’m an instant fan! Kirk’s voice is pleasant to listen to and he speaks in a friendly, easy way. I’m not a musician (aside from playing an instrument in high school) but I still feel like I understand even when he talks about nitty gritty musical theory stuff. I can’t wait to dive into the past episodes!
-
bequeathVaried and thoroughKirk does a great job of making things accessible for casual music fans but still interesting for those with a little more depth of knowledge. He doesn't just stick with one type of music; he really knows and loves it all, which not only makes each episode new an interesting but also helps him make connections between different songs and artists.
