    Interesting Guests & Thoughtful Host…
Jonathan explores the creative process with creative geniuses. The episode with Charlie Peacock made me think deeply and pray about my place in the world. If you haven’t read Jonathan Roger’s books, buy The Wilderking Trilogy and The Charlatan’s Boy. So good.

    Still my favorite podcast:)
I’m reposting my review because I wish I could give this show many many five star ratings. I had to say thanks again, I’m still listening, still loving it. Keep up the good work. I’ve been listening to this podcast for two years and it is still my favorite. It makes me laugh, it makes me hit the pause button and rewind to take notes, it makes me want to write. I have learned so much from JR and all the writers who shared their stories. Thank you!

    Andrew Peterson’s interview
I just listened to this particular podcast after doing a search for Andrew. Loved it! May be listening to more of your work here!

    Listen to your guests
Turned right off during The Faerie Queene episode when he said “to finish my sentence”. What a nice host you are!

    Creativity in light of resurrection
Encouragement for creatives of all kinds, as the speaker and his guests often talk through the creative process, it’s joys, and struggles..all with a redemptive point of view.

    It’s a gem
Do you need encouragement to live your one wild and precious life? Might you consider yourself a writer or an emerging writer? Do you like podcasts? Do you find Jesus tolerable, or maybe downright attractive? If the answer is in the affirmative to these questions, you may have found a home here.

    Great Podcast
Some of the best books I’ve read in the last couple of years I was introduced to through this podcast. I highly recommend this podcast for the interviews themselves, and for the books and other art that are discussed in them.

    Giving courage
Jonathan Rogers does a beautiful job of drawing out his guests. I’ve listened to almost every episode and each humble guest has something truly wonderful and worthwhile to offer to the listener. I’ve been given courage to believe that even I might be able put some words down on a page.

    Listen!
I love the idea behind this podcast, but the reality is the host seems to struggle deeply to just let his guests speak. He asks a question and answers it himself. He eats up time summarizing what the guests are saying and ends up taking more time away from the listener being able to hear from guest. He does much preaching to the choir. If the host really begins to study listening techniques and begin a radical practice of simply listening while allowing space for other voices, this would be a fantastic show.

    A weekly gift
The Habit is a major source of joy and encouragement for me, and is a weekly opportunity to see the world though other’s eyes. I am constantly inspired to, as is often said in the show, tell a truer story than ones the world tries to give.

    Great podcast!
Such a great podcast - good and rare, in a sea of podcasts, to find one that talks practically and thoughtfully on creativity and writing. Jonathan is such an excellent and humble interviewer, a writer himself with a great understanding of the craft. It’s wonderful to hear Christians speak on the intertwining of faith and work and beauty, though I suspect non-Christians (and all artists) would also glean much from these edifying talks.

    Engaging and Insightful
The Habit is the podcast that got me habituated to podcasts. No podcast I’ve met yet can match the unique, profound, and inspiring thoughts in every single episode of this one. I’ve not only gained courage for my writing (and more book recommendations than I’ll ever be able to explore), but deepened in my faith and developed tremendously in my conversation skills through the example of Jonathan Rogers. He is a model of “there you are” humility and grace, opening the floor for every guest to shine. Many thanks to Jonathan, Drew, and all the wonderful guests of The Habit - your work is truly bringing more beauty to the world.

    The Habit
This podcast is a breath of fresh air for anyone aspiring to write/create or those who just love to read. Jonathan Rogers is a skilled teacher of writing and gifted writer with a wonderful wit when discussing topics with his guests. The feel of the podcast is casual and intriguing. Guests are presented with thoughtful questions and given ample space to answer and even elaborate on said questions. This podcast is a blessing and I am so thankful to Jonathan and friends for taking the initiative and stepping out in faith to bring it to fruition.

Actually? It Quite Changed My Life...
This review is a long time coming. I have listened to every single one of The Habit podcasts...MOST of them three times, some of them only once, and a good handful of them seven or eight times...really! I listened to the entire two seasons in three months when I discovered it in the spring of 2020. Out of the 100 episodes so far, only one had near heresy in it... but this is a podcast about writing, not precisely about theology. Though, that topic has its way of glistening off the tongues of these wonderful authors as they explore their lives and loves through the end of their pens. I truly cherish these conversations. They have welcomed me into the world of writing, and I feel, somehow welcome here. This is how this podcast has changed my life. It brought me from being an admiring outsider afraid to step into my passion for writing, to the table of conversation with many of the greats of today. This podcast is a true education, in the most ancient and holy of ways. Come and sit at the table with those who hold wisdom by experience, and share grace freely by friendship. Jonathan Rogers may "hum" and "umm" a lot, but I have discovered that these pauses are just signs of his humility in all that he says. He is careful, caring, and generous, and from this podcast you would assume he's just a friendly neighbor next door, rather than the highly learned scholar that he really is. I hope you enjoy this cast as much I as have. It is one of only three casts that I follow regularly, and I've tried dozens.

    My Favorite Podcast
As a homeschooling mom and a writer, I don’t have many natural opportunities for listening to podcasts, but this is consistently the first one I turn to. Listening to writers talk about writing (and life) is encouraging and frequently makes me want to pick up a pen again. Highly recommend!

    Great Podcast!
This is my favorite podcast. The host Jonathan Rogers does a great job interviewing a variety of interesting writers. It "fills my bucket" as a writer. I enjoy listening to it every week.

    Insightful, warm, thought-provoking
Jonathan Rogers has a knack for creating a hospitable and disarming environment that invites open and honest conversation. He interviews authors who bring their own particular wisdom, insights and encouragement for creative people. It’s a win for civility and for booksellers: it makes me want to read all the books!

    Inspiring
Thank you for the creative variety!

    Really lovely
I found this podcast while looking for lectures from James K.A. Smith. I immediately recognized the tune from Arcadian Wild. A quick scan through the other episodes led to a dozen or more downloads and a few shares with friends. After just one episode I thought, he should interview Andrew Peterson. Ha! Way ahead of me. I think I have found my people.

A well spring of knowledge and comfort!
This podcast always feels like sitting in on a conversation with old friends. It peels back the mystery of the creative process, and gives hope to those aspiring to write their own part of the greater story!

    Makes Me Want to Write
This podcast is a delight from beginning to end. It features excellent production, a thoughtful and personable host, and more brilliant guests than you can shake a tired-out metaphor at. But even more amazing is how Jonathan and his guests serve their listeners by dismantling the image of the writer as a disembodied genius in an airy castle. By focusing on the art, craft, and day-to-day practice of writing, they invite the rest of us to join in the literary conversation. This podcast reveals notable writers for who they are: Hard-working, faithful people living in and writing about a messy, complicated, wonderful world.

    Walking with The Habit
Sometimes when I am walking, I smile with all my teeth showing. I laugh. I say “Yes, amen.” And then I get embarrassed because the neighbors saw me smiling or the neighbors caught me laughing or the neighbors heard me saying yes and amen. It’s The Habit. The Habit is to blame. The Habit in my earbuds. I just can’t hold down the happy when I’m listening to it.

Great for readers, writers, creative and curious folk
I love the curiosity, warmth, and humility that Jonathan Rogers brings to the role of interviewer. He chooses such a wide variety of fascinating people and then allows them to tell their own story without pushing them to fit a particular narrative he has constructed with a rigid set of questions. And yet his show has a beautiful continuity. This show has expanded my horizons as a consumer and helped me to support and understand my own creative producers.

Rich Ideas Both Abstract and Practical
Fantastic! I love this podcast for it’s variety of thoughtful content. It’s the kind of materiel that is so rich I feel like I can’t digest too much at one time, but a podcast I always return to for its helpful and encouraging information. Each interview seems fresh and I especially enjoy the interviews of writers from positions I don’t get to hear much about - ghost writers, playwrights, etc. It carries a nice balance of both abstract and practical ideas. I have recommended this podcast to friends and have forwarded my favorite episodes as well.

Pearls of wisdom in every episode
When I first started to listen to this podcast I would read the guest’s bio and sometimes think, “this one’s a songwriter (poet, mathematician, etc), probably not much applicable to me this episode.” But I couldn’t have been more wrong. In fact, sometimes the episodes I have expected to gain the least ideas to apply to my writing habit have turned out to be transformative! The conversations are so diverse and fun, not to mention full of tons of great reading suggestions and practical wisdom. I am always so excited to see who’s on next!

Good for both the mind and the soul
Jonathan Rogers is excellent at helping listeners get practical and inspirational advice from the writers he interviews. Besides the interesting practical peek behind their writing curtain, he is not afraid to ask questions about how they made hard choices about what to write and for whom to write. The wide diversity of writing styles and purposes these writers represent is encouragement that somewhere amidst so many, there is a way for my own writing voice to find a place. Thank you.
  • Always a delight to listen
    Always a delightful listen
The Habit features a distinguished and diverse cast of writers: academic writers, writers on the spiritual life, novelists, songwriters, playwrights. Each episode is as unique as that week's guest. The show's one constant is Jonathan Rogers, who is both genial and incisive as an interviewer. He asks open-ended but probing questions that draw out the distinct personalities of the writers, conducts the interviews with economy, and generally does everything to feature his guests rather than himself. The Habit invariably informs and delights me. I look forward to listening to it every week.

    More than just a Habit
My Mondays inevitably go like this. I wake up, get ready for the day and settle down to work. I’m full of the typical Monday slump—the internal workweek motor is coughing, sputtering how it would rather nestle in the covers and read a good book. I offer it music, a nice drink, and a comfy chair, but to no avail. And then it hits me—it is Monday, and Jonathan Rogers has graced us with another episode of The Habit. The work engine crackles to life (I should probably have it checked) and I whisked away for about half an hour (give or take) into a delight conversation rooted in a deep love for words, truth, goodness, and beauty. There is something to be learned for each episode of this podcast. The guests are insightful and cover facets of writing I did not know existed. If you’re a writer at some point you will hear a comment and think, “Someone else thinks about writing the same way!” But before you get too comfortable you’re introduced to someone with ideas that make you consider things you never have—or perhaps you have pondered but never had the words to express it. Jonathan Rogers is a wonderful host, and he draws out some great conversations from his guests. If you have yet to begin this podcast, I encourage you to listen to every one.

    An important and engaging podcast!
This podcast is so much more than its tagline encapsulates - Jonathan Rogers is out here having some vital conversations with folks about culture, theology, and life all within the context of writers talking about writing. He’s so good about regularly putting out content, and yet I constantly want more. I can’t WAIT for each new episode, and it’s a thrill every time a new one pops up in my notifications. I’m constantly learning and expanding from this, and I hope it goes on forever.

    Gives me courage!

Thank you Jonathan and the Rabbit Room for endeavoring to love us well and to remind us we are not alone. I look forward to catching up on more episodes and find myself wanting to share them all! Hooray! Thank you for your good work and good words! Sincerely, Sarah

Excellent podcast for writers, or anyone who wants and needs to create. The conversation is full of real-life wisdom and concrete techniques for better wordcraft. Rogers is a great interviewer and his guests are eclectic, approachable, and wise.

A delightful podcast for writers and readers!
Whether you're a writer, a reader, or just here for good conversations about making art, The Habit is a delightful podcast. I love Jonathan Rogers' philosophies about writing and community, and in this podcast he shares wonderful conversations about the art and craft of writing. And so many different writers are represented! From songwriters and graphic novelists to playwrights and novelists, anyone with an interest in words and art can find a friendly, insightful conversation they'll enjoy.

Main-line Creativity RIGHT INTO YOUR BRAIN
Jonathan Rogers turns his not-inconsiderable powers of speaking with people into a podcast powerhouse of cyclopean proportions. In every single one of these episodes he interviews someone different, and every single time that person says words of inimitable wisdom. One cannot help but picture Dr. Rogers sitting in his podcasting-harness while arrayed with all the vast implements of technology required for the transmission of creative thought. His stature looms immense and daunting--yet welcoming and somehow worthy of incensed adoration. When I finished listening to the best episode, I wrote three amazing things. It works.

Writing is never just about writing...
“Writing is never just about writing” is something I’ve heard Jonathan Rogers say once or twice. This podcast proves that theory true, as he weekly puts writers of all types in front of us to learn from and resonate with. This podcast is encouraging, funny, thoughtful, and you will leave with something in your pocket whether you are a writer or not.

    So good
I so look forward to every episode of The Habit podcast with Jonathan Rogers. His guests are unique and inspiring, freely offering their wisdom and insight to listeners. I always come away with a handful of nuggets to chew on as I work and create.

Excellent, thought-provoking, insightful resource for writers
I'm always interested in anything Jonathan Rogers has to say about writing. I often share with friends how I owe him a debt of gratitude for his book The Terrible Speed of Mercy, which served to properly introduce me to Flannery O'Connor and her writing. I absolutely love this podcast and it's one I listen to on the regular for inspiration, education, and general encuragement. It wets my appetite for good writing, re-acquaints me favourites like Karen Swallow Prior, and introduces me to gems like Jessica Hooten Wilson. It's a must resource for serious writers wanting to learn and grow. So grateful for it! 100% recommended!

    Love this podcast!
I think Jonathan Rogers nails it with this podcast. It’s a terrific line up of interesting authors who love their craft and humbly invite us into their creative worlds. The podcast production is clean and easy to listen to, and just the right mix between planned questions and easy conversations. I’ve been so inspired, and have started writing again after a few hard years. I look forward to the last question he closes with every time...”What author inspires you to write?” If you are a writer and/or a lover of books and book people, listen and be inspired!
  • Summerchaser
    Fascinating, thoughtful, inspiring
Some creative writing teachers treat writing as a formula: five ways to set a scene, ten tips for believable characters. Jonathan Rogers and his guests delve into the heart and soul of a writer’s work, the beauty, joy, and suffering of creating a great story. Definitely one of my favorite podcasts.
  • Watterso
Inspiring, But With Room To Grow
For writers who feel like they are alone with their writer’s block or hand cramps, this podcast comes along to pull open the curtain around the writing process of other writers to show that everyone faces similar challenges that can be overcome in creative ways. The insights are inspiring, and host Jonathan Rogers is quick to cultivate the conversation to draw out what is most helpful to writers. That said, the production quality requires some grace on he listener’s part, and I would love to see Jonathan develop a few key questions to ask every guest as a way of building routine and reinforcement into the podcast. Considering Jonathan’s success with The Habit e-newsletter, I’m looking forward to seeing where this podcast goes!

    Helpful and Encouraging!
Love this podcast! Jonathan Rogers is a gift to aspiring writers. These conversations are interesting, helpful, and encouraging. After each one, I’m inspired to go create and have some new tool or insight to help me along the way. Really thankful that the Rabbit Room is producing this!
