Fiction #188Drama #68

Written by New York Times bestselling author Rachel Hawkins, this historical horror story traps a group of sleuths in a haunted house desperate to escape the wrath of a vengeful ghost. Beatrix Greene makes her living by playing pretend. So when notorious scientist James Walker makes her a proposition—prove that ghosts are real, once and for all, for a hefty price—she can’t resist the temptation. But the ghosts of Ashbury Manor are very real, indeed, and when Beatrix summons one by accident, she and the other guests of the evening are terrified but find the doors of the manor won’t allow escape. Only unraveling secrets from the Manor’s past will banish the ghost for good. As time runs out and death stalks the halls, Beatrix and James must work together or risk being the haunting’s next victims.Beatrix Greene is a Realm production, written by Rachel Hawkins, Ash Parsons, and Vicky Alvear Shecter. I didn’t want it to end.
The best I’ve come across. Another season set in their new home would be most welcome!

    Such a good listen
This one I will be sharing with my friends. Great acting, great story. This one was HIT

    Awful
But people like trash, so you may like this. Neither the story nor modernization/updating were convincing, and it was a slog to get through. Unsubscribed the moment it finished, and sorry I wasted my time. Yikes, people! Two stars because the sound engineering was decent.

    Great listen
Great sounds and acting! Really well done story

    Could have been better
In most supernatural stories the evil serves as a metaphor for some real world issue. In this story, the evil is (not metaphorically AT ALL) toxic masculinity. That’s it. The house has an evil presence because men are mean to their wives. That’s the mystery. Very disappointing.

    AMAZING STORY and NARRATION
I wish I could gift 10 stars. This was an amazing lesson. I recommend to anyone looking for a spine tingling a story.

    Excellent!
The dual male and female narrators create a sense of romantic tension that flows through a dark, suspenseful and sometimes gruesome supernatural tale, giving it light, and deepening that complex interplay of cruelty and love that is the heart of another romantic tale that went horribly wrong. The voice actors are deft in portraying their elegant characters, as well as the villains of the story, with both voices actors portraying male and female voices. The writing of the story is balanced between adding details where we want them, between the romantic and the spine-tingling horrors, as well as keeping the pacing both suspenseful, sure, and quick. The overall story is not that long and ends where it should. Kudos to the sound design in delivering atmosphere and thrills. Creaks, the sounds of steps, the sharp sound of steel, ghostly whispers and the bolt of the door, all loud and clear.

    Bravo!
I’m really enjoying all of your podcasts! So well written, and I find myself listening to one after another because I have to know what is happening next. Like a very good book, I find myself upset it has ended as you get so involved in the characters and the story line. Keep up the great work!

    Sounds umm…. Familiar
Are people aware this “original” story is pulled straight from actual history?
  • TheEconoclast
    Great dramatic podcast!
I enjoyed the two different narrators and the sound effects and production values were really good. Neat story, too. Realm is putting out some dynamite stuff and the ad-free subscription option is AWESOME! So totally worth the few bucks per month.

    Season 2 please!
Loved it! The story wrapped satisfactorily but I would would love to see it continued!

Wow! Yes!! Loved it! Need season 2!!!
Absolutely loved this! Very crimson peak/Sherlock Holmes/romance novel. I love a good gothic horror ghost story. I was surprised when the amorous bits popped up, but didn’t find that they detracted from the story. (Sometimes I do wish a story about a woman could leave the romance out and just focus on her getting things done, living her life!) I 109% want a second season. Can’t wait to see what Beatrix encounters next. Love the male hero and also her BFF sidekick. Hoping to see more of all 3 of them!!

    Great Sound
The production and audio quality of this story is phenomenal. The voice actors are pleasing to listen to, and you do feel quite immersed in the story. ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~ ((I’ll do my best not to spoil anything, but warning just in case)) ~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~.~ I didn’t quite like how the story was wrapped up towards the end, but that’s more of my own personal tastes than a reflection of this show haha. The tension that was building felt rather cut short by a certain ghost-power revelation. It seemed to magically fix everything, and the supposed cause of it wasn’t to my liking. I didn’t feel the characters “changed/grew” as much as the writing suggested they did, as most everyone pretty much stayed true to how they were first introduced. Of course, I don’t want to dock any stars because that’s a pretty personal take, and my own interpretation. This show was overall done incredibly well, and I enjoyed the earlier episodes. I still definitely recommend it :))

    I’m in love 😍
I love the story but episode seven of Beatrix Green had me clutching my pearls imagining myself as a character and how I would have left them all in the basement with that man being dragged 😱😱🏃🏾‍♀️💨

Brilliant use of audio to create a spooky atmosphere
This is my favorite fiction podcast I’ve ever listened to so far! It really makes use of the audio format to immerse you in a haunted house, with ominous creaks and groans and footsteps that seem to come from right behind you. As the story progresses and gets even darker, the sound effects become quite visceral and raise the horror to a new level. I also love the charming musical interludes that indicate a switch in narrators. If you’re looking to get into audio fiction and you like ghosts and a dash of gore, definitely give this one a try!

    Loved it
Really enjoyed this spooky ghost story set in England in the late 1800s! The acting was tremendous and it has a kind of mysterious otherworldly vibe. Kept me entertained.

    Surprisingly good
I was hooked by the first episode, the story quite entertaining and the voice talents excellent. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a good ghost story. The romance was unexpected but a pleasant surprise. I cannot wait to listen to another podcast by realm.

    Refreshingly terrifying
Other reviews have said it all. The writing, acting, and sound are all far better than I have come to expect. Listen to this for strong (male and female!) roles, actual chills, and a very well-written period piece which captures Victorian spiritualism.
  • imdesa
    So fun and entertaining
This was a fun and exciting story with voices that are pleasant to listen too. The acting isn’t over the top and fake like most of this story based ghost stories are. This one is kinda short but the plot is not super predictable. Big fan

There needs to be a sequel!
I loved this so much! The story telling is amazing and the writing impeccable! However we need a sequel!

    Binge worthy gothic romance
I listened to all 9 episodes over a 18 hour period. Beatrix is a character one can admire and I was rooting for the romantic aspect.
  • wlwise1
Very enjoyable and entertaining, well done.
This was an enjoyable, if a little predictable, we’ll-done story. Was a nice little Victorian romantic thriller and time well spent.

    Wuthering Heights meets Gothic Horror
Incredible! Wuthering Heights meets The Woman in Black. The first two episodes… were a little slow, but by episode 3 I was hooked. I definitely recommend it if you enjoy romance/gothic horror.

    A GREAT STORY
I admit, when I first cranked this podcast up I didn’t think that I was going to like it. I twisted my arm to listen to episode two and three…and BOOM! I was hooked. A great story line and plenty of scares for the listener. Settle in and give this one a listen.

    So enjoyable!
I’m so glad I tried this! What a fun story! And the sound design is great!
  • Ddub_98
    Very well done!
I loved this story. I listened to the entire thing in one day! I really enjoyed everything about it. Aside from the ads that is. I’m just not willing to spend more money to go ad free. 🤷‍♀️ The narration is great. The sound effects really pull the whole thing together. The story is well written with several twists and turns. It has suspense, horror/haunting, and a love story all in one. Looking forward to checking out more from Realm!

    More romance than ghost story
Excellent production, lots of fun. Ultimately just not for me. I’d say it’s much more of a historical romance than anything else. Like a Sabrina Jeffries novel centered around spiritualism. Though the the squishing bloody sound effects did fill me with me absolute dread.

    Thoroughly Enjoyed
Light-hearted romance mingled with the occult. I found it to be entertaining and binge listened.

Excellent Production of Pretty Pedestrian Material
Beatrix Greene is an expertly produced and voiced audio drama. You’re in good hands with Realm productions. Enjoyment of the story, however, is likely to hinge on your appreciation for Victorian period, the genre-specific romance vibes of that setting, and what I would call “cozy horror”. If the above sounds like very much your thing, and vibes and atmosphere are more important than the originality or quality of the plot, you might really enjoy this. (And that isn’t meant to sound judgmental. Most of us have comfortable zones of entertainment where meeting expectations is perhaps preferable to exceeding or subverting them. It’s okay to like what you like!) If you’re looking for a story that will scare more than anxious house cat, this isn’t it. If you don’t have a high tolerance for that Victorian style of longing romance, and too frequent commentary on the particular color of someone’s eyes and the barely constrained emotions they reveal, this probably isn’t for you. If you want period horror that feels fresh and unlike other stories you’ve consumed, this mostly isn’t going to do the job. The episodes are also awkwardly broken up. What seem to be intended as intriguing cliffhanger episode breaks just…aren’t. There’s a fair amount of set up until you get to the seance portion of the story. And that setup is necessary for character establishment, and to make you care about our two leads. But in this podcast format, with the ad breaks and episode splits, the pacing suffers. Some sequences feel unnecessarily drawn out. Other parts speed by too quickly. Meticulously, laboriously asserted character traits crumble instantly. Yet nothing feels like an actual surprise, every beat heavily telegraphed. What’s good? Great narrators. Excellent audio production. Beatrix as a character is endearing (though I think if I’d read this in prose rather than with the terrific audio performance I’d have found her more two dimensional). I really liked the “American Photographer”, Amanda. Unfortunately for me, the story didn’t hold my attention and I got frustrated waiting for anything to happen. And, when it did, for those happenings to feel like something I hadn’t encountered over and over already. Give it a try, though—it might be exactly what you’re looking for.

    Amazing
I LOVED this! Every aspect of the show was beyond top notch. Cannot recommend enough
  • Stillbecoming
    Well made but predictable
Title says it all. Chewing gum for the brain—really delicious chewing gum, but gum nonetheless. I continued listening the way I would continue to read a cheap romance novel. Very heteronormative.
