Under Cover of Knight

1,398

In 1996, Sue Knight was found dead in her Athens, TX, home. Her will named a loose acquaintance as the executor of her estate, but after an alleged phone call from the CIA and a dire warning from the local sheriff, the executor stopped asking questions. More than 25 years later, Sue’s memory haunts the town of Athens and the people who knew her. Who was Sue, really? Why did this English expat settle in small-town Texas? And could she still be alive?

    Was really interesting at first
So boring after the first few episodes that it served as a better lullaby than a podcast

    Needs to be edited
The constant back and forth chit chat between the hosts is annoying. Very amateurish. Should've been edited out and podcast should've been much shorter. The first episode was great, but devolved from there into frustrating speculation and very little first-hand info. Would've been better subject handled by a real investigative reporter.

    Well produced nothing-burger
Interesting at first but then I wondered why we should care about this story. Investigators ignored professionals who told them the woman’s stories were bogus, but the investigation continued. Was reminded of a lovely friend of my mom, years ago, who made up stories, similar to the character in this podcast. We knew this friend told wild lies, listened politely, and cared not about her lies; she was a kind person who harmed no one in any way. Apparently these investigators are unfamiliar with folks like my mom’s friend.

    Sue a woman of mystery!
I thought this was a very interesting and different then other podcast. They deep dived into trying to learn the truth of who someone was during their lifetime and the many perspectives that go along with it. But also done in a heartfelt respectful way.

    Started off interesting
As others have said, it seemed very interesting for the first few episodes, but boy did it drag. The investigators were very thorough and did a great job investigating, the problem is there was nothing really worth investigating. I’m glad that the family connections happened though. That part was pretty cool.

    Plurality
Multiple things can be true. If you talked to people who have known me through the years, I’ve had brunette, blonde, red, dishwater blonde, curly, straight, long, and short hair. I’ve been a smoker, non-smoker, drinker, non-drinker, taken pills, not taken pills. Been a HS diploma- minimum wage earner, a college graduate/professional. She could be all the things different people remember about her. May she rest in peace.
  • Dympi
    Wall-to-wall background music
Too much music, right from the beginning, clinging on in the background well past the natural point. Amateurish and unlistenable. Please get some production training before you make your next podcast.

Strong start but after three episodes I could not continue listening to empty speculation and thin conspiracy theories. The reliance on sound design and music does not compensate for the lack of substance even at the hands of talented investigators. Don’t waste your time.

    Lost my interest too
Repetitive after the first two episodes. Found myself picking up my phone to see what’s new.

    Lost My Interest
Compelling early on, but I lost interest and stopped listening by episode nine.
  • johlej
    Well made but very anti-climactic
I was really compelled by this early on and the format. It opens with the host saying she won’t be in the podcast and that it will be told by the ones who experienced it but that’s not really the case. There’s a lot of discussions from the researches and host. It’s all about their opinions on the info they are receiving. That’s cool but not what you think this is gonna be. It was pretty clear it was a suicide and a bunch of small town gossip. Which a compelling podcast does not make.
  • Texasnative3
    Aggravating
This starts off interesting but as more and more information comes to light, it becomes apparent some of the narrators can’t let go of what seemed at first blush to be a gripping tale of a woman on the run from something. Let it go.
  • 7Valley7
A Podcast That Should Not Have Been Released
A sensational hypothetical is used to hook the listener on episode one, while the showrunners know full well that it came from an unreliable source and is untrue. As soon as they read the documents in Sue Knight's personal file, the ethical thing to do would have been to cancel the project. Instead, we're presented with this lazy and shameless attempt to make "something out of nothing," and I hope that they are not given a future opportunity to waste people's time.
  • Thwackdown
    Don’t waste your time
Felt less like a podcast and more like a dare to see how much nonsense I could endure. Spoiler: I lost. Feels like the team behind this story learned about the sunk cost fallacy. Don’t waste your time with this show. They really try to squeeze a 10 episode story out of nothing. Repetitive, misleading, and a bit exploitative.
  • LyPiazza
The narrators fell into the conspiracy
Instead of just accepting what was clearly explained by the men who actually knew this woman, the narrators seemed like they were bending over backwards to prove what rural, small town people created in their minds as the “real story”. Also, the narrators do not understand what depression is—making their own conclusion that she couldn’t have been depressed bc of a note she wrote to herself 8 months before she died. (not close enough to the time she died to factor as her state of mind) They did a good job at interviewing everyone. It’s their conclusions that made the end of the podcast sound like a bad joke—“British woman walks into a bar….” And the locals all have a turn with the punchline.

    Obsessed with this podcast
I found this podcast and literally listened to at least one episode every day - often times more! The hosts/researchers added SO much to this show -- their diligence, respect for those they were interacting with and their emotional investment in Sue and all those around her touched me deeply. I also found all the experts interviewed incredibly interesting and invaluable to the process. And I found myself pondering many of my memories and wondering how accurate, or inaccurate, they were! Great job by all involved in this show -- it was superb.

    a waste of listening time
    Much ado about nothing
  • TVeblen
    Disorganized, poorly recorded, and foolish
The organization of the material is haphazard. They give equal credence to each and every voice, when clearly the people talking are unreliable. The audio quality of the phone recordings and even the chatter between the hosts is poor. This is not a “professional” podcast. Don’t waste your time.
  • RMX65
    No story
Seems like they try to make a story from nothing. Bad…
  • Kinda lame
    It’s pretty mid,
Story changes information inconsistently missing data, missing hard drives and missing information are not the same thing. They also cut non dramatic quotes and make them cliffhangers. It’s not good
  • Mt9876543
Had promise- but failed to understand itself
Will admit I stopped around episode 9- but as the conclusion becomes obvious to any adult- (25 year old memories are unreliable and hiding the truth is a normal part of the human experience)- one of the narrators gently tries to nudge the other with that truth. And why this podcast fails comes out- rather than pivoting- the young team worries that the obvious conclusion makes a bad story. The truth is every humans story- particularly this one- could be interesting, if told the right way. Continuing to report and perseverate on unreliable single source information that becomes obviously impossible and because you want the sensational to be true doesn’t make it true. It just becomes irritating. Better luck finding something you find interesting next time- and if you finally reached the conclusions I mentioned- sorry I couldn’t slog through and wait on you to see what was right in front of you.

    Should’ve Used a Different Lens
Enjoyed the hosts/researchers, style, thoughtfulness, etc. The story, or maybe intent, was a bit misleading. The podcast does not end up heading where you would expect, in a way that feels a bit deflating. Without giving spoilers, I would say that the theme of the last two episodes should have been more evident from the beginning. The message would have been more impactful if the story was told through a different lens.
  • eegreite
    Should have been 3 episodes
A colossal waste of time even at 2x speed.

    Valley Girl nonsense
“Fer shure!” Valley girls reveal their ignorance of human nature, and history and culture prior to their birth. So many assumptions and conclusions were stupidly made.

    Goes Nowhere
This show seems like it will be interesting but is just far too drawn out. I was surprised at how much credence was given by the host to easily debunked theories. For people who call themselves “true crime junkies” and researchers, they don’t seem to have a basic understanding of how law enforcement processes work. The broader societal story about how this woman’s death has been mythologized in a small town, and that would have made it an actually compelling story, was complete missed.
  • jen98a
Didn’t go where you expect and ends up encapsulating so many things about human nature
This podcast didn’t go where one would expect but it ends up encapsulating so many things about human nature. I don’t think anyone on the team is a mother because if they were they’d understand how painful it would be giving up a child. We see things through our own life experiences & to me it was so obvious; she had a traumatic childhood & she was running from that & the hurt of having to give up her children. She chased her father down & felt abandonment. Then had her babies taken from her, further having things leave her. Who would want to stay in a place with those memories? Who would want to admit those things? So she never returned home to live & made up stories so she wouldn’t be further asked. She also likely felt to be needed. And she found a place is rural Texas that let her escape those memories & made good friends who made her feel special. As for her death. I think when death occurs to someone so young our minds try to come up with stories. Did the guy who said she called, was he a drinker and maybe had a dream while drunk? The CIA thing. Did one person say it & another while high or drunk imagine the same thing? One great thing this podcast proves is our memories are fallible. And sometimes we can’t even trust our own minds. About her death - she had heart problems and flu can hit the heart. Was the heart examined microscopically to determine if there was myocarditis? Still several different explanations left unexplored but all in all a good story about how one person ties so many together.

    Well Done
Holy cow I don't understand the anger and vitriol around this podcast! It's very well done. It's extraordinarily researched. Maybe because it didn't go the way you wanted it to go? Give the hosts, producers, consultants a break! I kept waiting for it to get bad considering the weird reviews. And it never did. So we may never know. I think it was fascinating and there were many reasons to look into the life of this person. I am quite frankly delighted that I found it.

    Misleading and drawn out
What they initially lead you to believe this story is going to be about goes absolutely no where. Should have been two episodes. Don’t waste your time

I think she may have just been a pathological liar!?!?

    I loved it
This is not a story about a mysterious super spy - it’s a story about the (faulty) memories left behind by the life of a complicated person. I agree with the sentiment of the last episode: I wish we could do extensively researched podcasts for all our dearly departed loved ones.

    Rabbit Hole
I went down the rabbit hole and listened to the entire show. I think it was drawn out at certain times, could have moved faster. But, still a mystery and a human life gone too soon. Gone under suspicious circumstances. It’s tragic and I try and remember that. Sue was very complex, hence, the complexity and confusion of how she passed. Just think about all the friends, family and pray some closure in this lifetime.

    Sick invasion of privacy
Y'all should be ashamed for making a spectacle off someone’s life without their consent. It’s wild you got to the point of recording yourselves trying to come up with reasons to justify your actions. This woman clearly had a lot of tragedy and heartbreak in her life. You chased down every acquaintance of hers from 30 years ago to surface random stories she told along the way to some people who may not have known better. You work to make a fool of the people she knew and her memory for your profit. No ethics. You should take this down.

    Nothing Burger
Like watching (listening to) a car crash. First of all the millennial diction making everything a question is very annoying. Show should have been 2 episodes. Way too repetitive. I keep listening hoping for some big revelation. Big fat nothing burger and total waste of time.

    Loving this!!
I went to Trinity Valley Community College for two of the years she was living there so I find this story very interesting, but even more so since I know the town! Listening to it to me is like sitting down to a good book you can’t put down!

Apple shouldn’t be promoting this one
Downloaded this because it was a featured podcast… how disappointing - the first couple episodes set up all this mystery and intrigue for none of it to matter. Wish I could put all this useless information I’ve absorbed into a digital trash can like this podcast I’ve downloaded.

Catfish is a great description. Wish I had read the reviews before I invested my time in this.

    Mediocre
Started off with a bang and went down hill quickly. Very redundant with confusing transitions between each episode. Overall a big let down.
  • Xxxxhhhhrrrroooostupid
    Why?
What a waste of time. There is no real story here except a woman who got married a zillion times, abandoned her kids and killed herself in Texas. With all due respect this is not what a podcast should be about unless that is how it is presented up front. There was no crime, no mystery. Scam and a joke. Sorry ladies. Do better next time.

    Do some additional research
The limited research the team did on suicide is disappointing. Dismissing death by Suicide as a cause of Sue’s death bc she was not diagnosed by a Dr in the 90s and the lack of a note is astounding. They talked to experts on everything else including wire tapping but not on the evolution of mental health treatment and identification of suicide and loneliness? Dumb. NAMI would have been an excellent source for this.
  • rtnzlve
The biggest catfish of a podcast
Do not waste your time listening to this nothing burger of a story. Spoiler: There is no mystery and the hosts sound like a bunch of valley girls gossiping in a coffee shop. I wish I could get that time back. Skip it!
  • hdbfly
Pointless and stupid; completely not extraordinary
What was the point of this? Nothing is resolved at all, it all goes nowhere. The idea that the producer still believes that Sue could be a superspy is ridiculous and further undermines their credibility. So doess the idea of her being in the IRA when there is no evidence of her being in Northern Ireland. Absurd. And stupid. The producers draw conclusions from the tiniest iota of circumstantial nothing. Why was this chosen at all? Why were so many hours devoted to it? The only good thing is the connections her family made. The special piece played for the family at the end is just a repetition of everything in the show. And tells us nothing new, and is contradictory. Why do you need send a longer version? They can just Listen to the show. Just not a good experience. I am shocked that this an Apple production. Omg. The final producer rant is the insane and inane. I’m not thinking about Sue because she is not extraordinary. This podcast is the furthest from extraordinary. I listened to the end to see how bad it could get.
  • ProfKoala9
    Total letdown
Not sure why this was even made. The “mystery” mostly seems to be gossip and hearsay. The most logical conclusion seems mental illness and loneliness, along with familial estrangement. In which case, this seems incredibly exploitative or at least, super insensitive. It feels like someone REALLY wanted to make a murder mystery podcast even if the case didn’t warrant it. The giggly producers discussing the private nuances of Susan’s life made me cringe. I stopped after seven episodes.
