The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks

60

Jar Jar Binks became one of the most polarizing figures in cinematic history when he made his debut in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace in 1999. He was even named "the most annoying movie character of all time" by Complex Magazine. After the release, Ahmed Best, the man who played Jar Jar, was hit with the full force of the backlash — and it nearly destroyed him. The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks is a six-part journey through the early internet to understand how one of the first-ever online hate campaigns began, and to right what we got so wrong about Jar Jar the first time around.

    Amazing
Great listen. I saw The Phantom Menace in theaters at 9 years old and loved Jar Jar. Never jumped on the hate train with everyone else and I also never understood it. It’s crazy to see this is the first character the internet banded together to hate. There’s a lot to learn in this listen. Very well done by all 👏🏻

    Jar jar blinks
Thanks for doing this Dylan. I had fun listening to this cast. I lost a family member last week. It’s been interesting for me to see how different people dealt with the loss of this wonderful man. I disagree, jar jar was a very real character as silly as he is. Real people are unbelievable at times. We had a driveway party for my cousin and it was light and fun and respectful. Yet there were personalities that criticized not having this remembrance in a church for this church going man. Jar Jar would have fit in perfectly because we all wanted to feel good. I digress too far. There are manny silly folks out there that are none the less believable. Take Cappy

    Good but not great
Overly precious and contemplative and in need of some editing. Good interviews with Best and others. Could have been condensed to a This American Life segment

    Are you aware
Of the theory that Jar-Jar is actually the ultimate Sith Lord? And his antics are a way to disarm his marks? They think he's a harmless, clumsy idiot, and allow him close, which is when he uses his sith mind control.

    I always loved Jar Jar

    Phenomenal Journalism
This was absolutely captivating. I knew some of the history about the actor who played Jar Jar, but did not know the extent of it. As a millennial Star Wars fan, the prequels were a big deal for me, and as stated in the show, George Lucas made Jar Jar for the kids (like me). The evolution of that character and the prequels is fascinating from a sociological POV. Regardless of who you are, if you know anything about Jar Jar, this show is a moving story about human emotion, society, and pop culture.

    Unexpectedly moving
I started this because I am a Star Wars fan but consumed it in two days because I am an even bigger fan of people who overcome overwhelming challenges. This was a story told with intelligence and compassion. I recommend it to everyone.

Spectacular detail to a near-tragic story
Learning more about Ahmed Best and what he was forced to endure in the wake of the Jar Jar Binks early internet vitriol is beautifully told. I really enjoyed the podcast, and the humanity it gave to the people involved. The only complaint I have is the refusal on the part of the host to admit that the Jar Jar character is indeed pretty bad, and from a cinematic perspective truly does lower the movie to worse than camp levels. But to hold Mr Best responsible and the attacks he endured because of this role is difficult to listen to. To hear how he has come through the gauntlet with this person and sense of humor intact is wonderful.

    The beauty of compassion.
Thank you for sharing the story of Ahmed Best. I am so moved by the loving way you treated everyone you interviewed for this podcast. I want to see this as a play on Broadway. You are on to something here. Kindness and thoughtfulness can be propagated and taught as much as any hate and vitriol spewed across the Internet. Your podcast has given me hope that there is a way forward past the negativity. It is a document of our growing up in many ways. Thank again and best wishes to all involved!

    Interesting but …
To start things off, I liked Dylan’s “People That Hate Me” podcast and l GET IT. However, I don’t necessarily agree with the premise “If someone is offended, something offensive was done.” Some people can be hypersensitive, and can read their own agenda onto a blank page. Isn’t that what a Rorschach test is all about? I think he could have explored the concept of false impressions better. This is possibly a generational thing, as victimization seems to be the current fashion. As an aside, Jar Jar was my girlfriend’s absolutely favorite Star Wars character of all time, but she thought J J was female.

This show is really really good
It contains multitudes. They go into so many more subjects and talk to do many more people than I expected. It really really touched me and helped me see a huge piece of my cultural past with new and thoughtful light. Thank you. I am sorry and thank you.

    An important story
As someone who enjoys Star Wars and cringes at the internet community’s broad and quick judgements of art, this has been such a valuable deep dive. Thank you for making it!

I have never seen Star Wars (now I want to) but I absolutely love this story about the internet.

Okay - but too drawn out
The topic is interesting, but like a lot of podcasts these days, the writing is drawn out and tedious at times. A tighter edit would make it much better.

    Gripping storytelling
Bravo and thank you, Ahmed and Dylan. I was sucked in from Dylan's NPR's interview, have binge listened to the first 3 episodes and recommended to friends, family and colleagues in the podcasting industry.
