Growth Machine

50

Housing prices in Austin have exploded in the past decade, leading to a city that’s not just unaffordable — but also highly segregated. None of this happened by accident. It’s the result of decades of decisions about what — if anything — gets built in Austin and where. From a master plan to move Black and brown residents to one part of town, to fights over how to protect the environment, to an outdated land development code — all of these are pieces in a machine that’s engineered Austin’s housing market.

    A good starting point
I found the podcast largely interesting and balanced, but thought the last couple episodes petered out. They seemed shallower and less focused / planned. I hope you make more and continue on your intellectual/reporting journey, there’s lots of talent and care that went into this show and it still gave me plenty to think about.

    Great information
I thoroughly enjoyed this podcast and learned a lot. It’s well done and connects the dots through a century of Austin’s development, focusing on zoning on systemic policies that shaped our housing market.

Mandatory listening for anyone new to Austin
This is an incredibly informative podcast about essentially the entire modern of Austin, and how it grew so fast to the point that it is currently. The origins of all those interesting street names, the locations, and neighborhoods are explained in this podcast. Definitely worth a listen

Really informative show about Austin Growth relevant to any city
I really found this show informative. It is NOT just about Austin but an introspection about growth at the local level. It’s a really deep exploration of the problems created from this success and in a way a warning to other communities emulating the Austin growth machine dynamic. This podcast really put my experience as an Austinite over the last 3 decades into context. It’s really made me think and challenge my assumptions. Now when I think, a community feels like Austin 30 years ago, I cringe a bit. The Growth Machine is very thought provoking without really making judgements. Very balanced reporting.

    Excellent
I am native Austinite, but have lived elsewhere for most of my life. That said, I returned often, and witnessed the city’s extraordinary growth, and the constant controversy surrounding it. Not until listening to this podcast had I really had a handle on the larger context behind the daily stories. “Growth Machine” is a portrait of one American city, but it accurately and engagingly describes the forces shaping many if not most American cities.

    I recommend this to everyone!
Extremely well researched, great narrative storytelling, and all of the intrigue. This podcast has been so needed for so long to really begin to foster a shared understanding of how Austin’s housing market got to where it is today. Thank you KUT, please keep this going!

    For new and old Austinites
I’ve been in Austin for about 13 years and in the past 5 have had so many questions about Austin’s growth—many of which begin with WHY. Audrey and the team at KUT have done a wonderful job so far of begin to explore how Austin got to be where it is and why growth seems to be so challenging for one of the 10th largest cities in the US.

If you ever wonder how we got here in Austin, this is the podcast for you
Audrey does a fantastic job telling the big stories from out cities growth in an interesting and accessible way, and then intertwining the very real consequences and laws involves to trick you into thinking and learning about public policy. This is a city that is in an ongoing lively debate about what we do next, what we want to retain from the past, and what we want to become. This podcast brings much needed background information to anybody looking to participate in that debate.

    Required listening for (new) Austinites
As someone who’s come to austin in the last 15 years, I can see how things ARE, but not necessarily how they came to be that way. This pod is a great, unbiased and objective look at the factors that most deeply impacted the way our city has grown. And it’s interspersed with such a variety of voices, telling stories from their own lives and perspectives. I’m loving it and can’t wait for additional episodes!

Excellent discussion of the insane changes in the ATX housing market.
Excellent reporting. Notes the insane changes in housing costs in ATX, both renting and owning. We bought in north Hyde Park in 1989 for $65k! Of course taxes are now well over $1000/month. So expensive to live here.
